When you look in the mirror,
what do you see?
Deeper than the eye color,
what is the color of your soul?
Beneath the lines on your face,
how smooth is the surface
of your heart?
Beyond the solemnness,
is there a glimmer of joy?
Beyond a smile,
is there hurt?
Beyond confidence,
is there a cold stream of fear?
Beyond doubt,
is there hope?
Do you titter-totter between the extremes
resisting the multilayered truth?
Is your heart light
or heavy
when you look in the mirror?
Are you stuck in a rut,
or frozen among options,
from fear you might make the wrong choice,
again?
Are you at the crossroads
between love,
promises,
ideals,
responsibilities?
How do you choose when you feel powerless?
Release your concern
over unfulfilled promises;
you have a right to change your mind.
Let go of ideals,
for they are only a reflection
of our collective hunger
for perfection.
But hold on to love.
Love is the ultimate promise
and the greatest responsibility;
the undercurrent of all of life’s offerings.
It is what is pure
and perfect
and unchanging,
beyond the myriad of caricatures
that the world makes it out to be.
But to extend love to others
is to love yourself first,
for you cannot give
empty.
So when you find yourself
struggling for words,
or choosing the path of least resistance,
ask yourself
how much do you love that face in your mirror?
And see if you can find
that quiet place in your heart
where all answers lie wrapped up
in gentleness.
A tender heart is the voice of love
that has a power to transform
a forced smile
into joy,
and tired eyes
into happiness.
And all of the sudden,
you begin to notice
that blinding beauty radiating from within,
from the core of your being
to your fingertips.
Beyond doubt,
beyond guilt,
beyond wishful thinking,
beyond fear,
you now see a miracle
when you look in the mirror.
