What is happiness? How do we get there? How do we stay there?
Happiness is a state of mind sprinkled with the ability to navigate life’s circumstances in a way that highlights the awe and wonder and gently cradles the challenges in the arms of acceptance, understanding and grace.
We have access to happiness within us. We know this, because if we take a moment to close our eyes and think of something wonderful, we can almost certainly feel a sensation of our hearts lifting…the swells rising deep within our core. We can remember times when we felt joyful and vibrant even in the midst of quite ordinary circumstances. And we might also remember times when we found ourselves in the most beautiful places with extraordinary people and felt lonely or unfulfilled. External circumstances that allow for amazing experiences and cushy lives can certainly support the lightness of being, but this lightness of being is not dependent on anything outside of ourselves. It is a state of mind by which we choose to set our sails towards awe and wonder and compassionately cradle challenges that inevitably arise on the journey. Life is all about the ebb and flow, the shifts, the transformations, the spirals. We cannot control all that comes at us, but the more we learn to notice and appreciate the little blessings as golden threads holding the tapestry of our lives together, the more conscious we become at choosing how to respond, what to think and how deeply to allow ourselves to feel. Under all the insecurities, uncertainties and fear, we are immensely powerful. We can imagine happiness because it is already within us.
